Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Your personal information never leaves your browser.

The information you enter into our questionnaire — your name, address, rent amount, roommate names, and every other field — is processed entirely on your own device. It is not transmitted to us, not stored on our servers, and not shared with any third party.

This is not a marketing claim. It is how the Service is technically built.

1. Who We Are

BreakupLease (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the website at breakuplease.com. We provide self-help legal document templates for renters in the United States.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

Because of how our Service is designed, we do not collect:

  • The information you enter into the questionnaire (name, address, rent, deposit, roommate names, dates, forwarding address, etc.).
  • The documents you generate.
  • Your landlord’s or roommate’s personal information.
  • Any financial information beyond what is required to process your payment (see Section 4).

Your questionnaire data is stored in your browser’s local storage (a standard web technology) and is used only to generate your documents. You can clear this data at any time by clearing your browser’s cache or local storage.

3. Information We Do Collect

We collect a limited amount of information in the following circumstances:

3.1 Purchase information

When you purchase a document kit, our payment processor (Polar, see Section 4) collects the information required to complete the transaction: your email address, payment method details, and billing information. We receive only a confirmation of the purchase and the email address associated with it.

3.2 Technical information

Like most websites, our hosting provider (WordPress) may automatically log basic technical information when you visit the Site, such as:

  • Your IP address
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Pages visited on our Site
  • Date and time of your visit

This information is used solely for security, performance monitoring, and to prevent abuse of the Service.

3.3 Voluntary contact

If you contact us by email (support@breakuplease.com), we will have access to the content of your message and your email address. We use this only to respond to your inquiry.

4. Third-Party Services

We rely on the following third-party providers to operate the Service:

Provider
Purpose
Polar (polar.sh)
Payment processing, order confirmation. Polar acts as Merchant of Record for all sales and is subject to its own privacy policy.
WordPress
Web hosting and content management.
jsDelivr CDN
Delivers the JavaScript library used for Polar checkout. Only the library is loaded — no personal data is transmitted.

We do not sell, rent, or share your information with any other third party for marketing purposes.

5. Cookies and Local Storage

We use the following browser storage technologies:

  • Local storage — used to save your questionnaire data on your device so that you can complete your purchase and download your documents on the same browser.
  • Session storage — used to remember minor UI preferences (such as whether you closed a notification bar) during your visit.

Neither technology transmits data to our servers. You can clear both at any time from your browser settings.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have specific rights regarding your personal information.

6.1 California residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information is being collected about you (see Section 3);
  • Request deletion of your personal information;
  • Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your personal information. We do not sell your personal information.

To exercise these rights, contact us at support@breakuplease.com.

6.2 Other U.S. residents

Residents of other states with consumer privacy laws (including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah) have similar rights. Contact us to exercise them.

6.3 EU/UK residents

While our Service is designed for U.S. renters, if you access the Site from the EU or UK, you may have rights under the GDPR. Given the design of the Service — where questionnaire data stays in your browser — the scope of personal data we process is minimal (essentially your email and payment confirmation only).

7. Data Retention

Because we do not store your questionnaire data, there is nothing for us to retain. Purchase records are retained by Polar in accordance with its own policies and applicable tax and accounting obligations.

8. Security

Our Site is served over HTTPS. Payment processing is handled by Polar using industry-standard security measures (including PCI DSS compliance). Because your questionnaire data never reaches us, the risk of a data breach involving that information is effectively eliminated.

9. Children’s Privacy

The Service is not directed at anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent version. Continued use of the Service after any change constitutes your acceptance of the new policy.

11. Contact

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or wish to exercise any of your rights, contact us at:

In short: Your personal data is yours. We designed this Service so that we cannot see it, store it, or lose it. If you ever want us to delete the only information we might hold about you (your email associated with a purchase), just ask and we will.
